Invincible — From Page to Screen

For the uninitiated, Invincible is arguably one of, if not the greatest, superhero sagas in comic book history. Mind you, outside of the “Big Two” publishers (Marvel and DC). However, even stacking it against its larger corporate counterparts, it remains amongst the pantheon of greatest superhero tales. So, if you’ve been watching the animated TV show or are curious about reading this legendary epic, now is the perfect time to hop into the comics! We here at Panel Bound Comics—Comics at an Organic Price have you covered!

Faithful Adaptation: How to Collect

For the most part, Invincible’s show is incredibly faithful to its comic counterpart, and for good reason too- Robert Kirkman, the comic’s creator, is heavily involved with the TV show. In fact, he’s officially listed as penning 6 episodes so far, and is an executive producer on the series. If you’ve wanted to see where Season 4 (the latest season at the time of this article) ends in the comics, its finale climaxes on issue #79. Or, if you are a visual person, see the photo below!

The sad thing about Invincible is that it is not an ongoing series, despite Kirman's desires. The good thing about Invincible is that this superhero tale has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Another great thing about it is that it’s been collected in a variety of different ways from Library editions, compendiums, hardcover compendiums, and oversized deluxe editions, too. But, Image Comics, either answering the call of collectors everywhere, or as a marketing tactic to promote season four, or a little bit of both, decided to drop its very own omnibus edition to its line of collected formats!

With that said, here are the ways to read Invincible:

  • Compendium Edition Bundle
    • This compendium edition are a great way to read this epic saga from beginning to end. Compendia (plural for compendium)  are standard-sized trade paperbacks, but collect a larger number of issues, almost as big as a textbook (if they still have those nowadays). Compendiums are better for travel and cheaper, but because it's a paperback edition, wrinkles, tears, and other blemishes are more likely to happen if not cared for properly.
  • Compendium Hardcover Edition Bundle
    • For the longest time, this was essentially the “omnibus” edition of Invincible. This is a slightly larger format than its predecessor and has the protected format that bestows hardcover books. It wasn’t until April 2026 that this edition would be eclipsed by a proper omnibus format.
  • Ultimate Hard Cover Edition Bundle
    • A proper deluxe edition size, these Ultimate editions can be found in a 12-volume set. For collectors out there who want, or wanted, their Invincible collection to match the rest of their Omni collection, this was the way to go. While it wasn’t the most economical (i.e. the 12 volumes compared to the 3-volume set of its compendium counterparts), it was the only option in this size. Additionally, these editions are the first sets that have “extras” in it. Meaning, it contains extra behind-the-scenes look at the series.
  • Omnibus Edition
    • An even bigger upgrade to the Ultimate editions, the omnibus edition collects even more behind-the-scenes looks at the series, and even collects the famous Spider-Man crossover, which hasn’t been collected until now! The biggest con, if you will, to the omnibus edition is that we have to wait for the rest of the volumes to come out. At this time, it is unknown how many volumes of the omnibus editions will be released.
  • Invincible Universe - Compendium
    • Already read the series? Watched the TV show and want more? Never done either and want to dive into the deep, rich universe of Invincible? Well, look no further!
  • The Art of Invincible Season 1 & Season 2
    • If you love the TV show, love the animation and art style, then these are the books for you! This would make the coolest coffee book to impress guests, or it can serve as one of your most cherished art books for you to peruse at your own pace.
