While We Wait for the Batman: Knightfall Animated Movies
It's a good time to be a DC fan, with the DCU from James Gunn, to various other DC-related animated projects taking the airwaves this year. Suffice it to say, fans have a lot to look forward to in 2026. Warner Bros. Animation's upcoming Batman: Knightfall adaptation is finally bringing one of the Dark Knight's most beloved comic storylines to animation, with the first installment currently slated for a "summer 2026" premiere and a wider release date still shrouded in mystery at the time of writing. The project will adapt the legendary saga that changed Gotham forever, introducing audiences to Bane's devastating assault on Batman and the events that followed Bruce Wayne's fall.
Of course, waiting for new Batman content can feel almost as painful as having your back broken by Bane (you can't be spoiled by a 30+year old comic at this point), so we wanted to treat y'all to a few reading recommendations that capture the same Bat-Family energy, legacy themes, and Gotham-wide stakes that made Knightfall such an enduring classic.
Criteria For Recommendations
One of the biggest reasons we selected these particular stories is that Knightfall represents a major turning point for the Bat-Family. Before the events of Knightfall, Batman's allies often operated independently, appearing in their own corners of the world with limited crossover between characters. As Bruce Wayne falls and Gotham faces one crisis after another, Nightwing, Robin, Alfred, Oracle, and countless other allies are forced to work together like never before. That sense of unity, shared responsibility, and legacy became a defining element of Batman comics moving forward. If you don't see what you'd recommend, we'd love to hear from you! Reading Order
Alright, without further ado, let's begin below:
-
Batman: Knightfall Triology Omnibus Bundle
- What better way to prepare for a comic book show/movie than by reading its source material?! The answer — there IS no other way! We linked the Omnibus bundle to show you the scope of the Knightfall event. If you don't have space for all three volumes, you might want to clear space. However, if you want to buy each volume one at a time to pace yourself, then we do sell them individually too.
-
Batman: War Games
- The story showcases how important Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, Oracle, and the rest of Batman's allies have become. All while fighting an all-out gang war in Gotham. While Bruce Wayne remains involved, the spotlight frequently shifts to the larger Bat-Family, making it a perfect read for fans who enjoy the ensemble aspects of Knightfall.
-
Batman: Rise and Fall of the Batmen Omnibus
- For readers looking for a more modern Bat-Family epic, Batman: The Rise and Fall of the Batmen Omnibus is an easy recommendation. Built around the Detective Comics run from the DC Rebirth era (we are counting this as another "event omni", just like Knightfall) this massive collection focuses on Batman assembling and mentoring a team of Gotham's finest heroes. Batwoman, Tim Drake, Spoiler, Orphan, Clayface, and others all play major roles as the team faces threats no single hero could handle alone.
-
Batman: Battle For The Cowl
- If you love the central premise of Knightfall (again, you can't be spoiled on a story that's been out for nearly three decades) then Battle for the Cowl should be your next stop! Much like Knightfall, Bruce is no longer Gotham's Caped Crusader. The difference? This time, he is presumed dead following the events of Final Crisis. Gotham descends into chaos as heroes, villains, and members of the Bat-Family all grapple with the same question: who becomes Batman?
And In The End
Batman: Knightfall remains one of the most influential Batman stories ever published, and its upcoming animated adaptation has the potential to introduce an entirely new generation of fans to the saga. In fact, it arguably contains one of the most iconic panels in comic book history.
So, while we wait for the mysterious summer 2026 release to finally arrive, these Bat-Family-focused stories offer the perfect way to revisit the themes that made Knightfall so memorable: legacy, sacrifice, and the question of what happens when Batman can no longer answer Gotham's call.
Whether you're revisiting Gotham's greatest crises or experiencing them for the first time, these books prove that sometimes the most interesting Batman stories are the ones where Batman isn't the only hero in town.
