Geoff Johns is one of the most influential figures in the history of DC Comics — a writer who didn't just tell great stories, but fundamentally reshaped the characters and mythology he touched, often for decades to come. Born in Detroit in 1973, Johns studied film and screenwriting at Michigan State University before breaking into comics in the late 1990s, launching his career with Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and rapidly ascending with landmark runs on The Flash and JSA.

His superpower has always been restoration — taking characters who'd been diminished, forgotten, or written off and rebuilding them with depth, scale, and emotional resonance. His nine-year run on Green Lantern, beginning with Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004), is among the most celebrated in modern comics history, expanding the mythology into an entire emotional spectrum of Lantern Corps that became a cornerstone of the DC universe. His The Flash: Rebirth similarly revitalized Barry Allen after decades on the sidelines. Infinite Crisis, Blackest Night, and DC: Rebirth all bear his fingerprints as major universe-reshaping events, and his Shazam! reinvention with artist Gary Frank remains the definitive modern take on the character.

From 2010 to 2018, Johns served as Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment, overseeing the creative direction of the entire line and bridging the gap between comics and the screen.

In Hollywood, his output has been enormous. He co-created and executive produced the CW series The Flash, Titans, Doom Patrol, Batwoman, Stargirl (which he created as a tribute to his late sister Courtney, who died in the TWA Flight 800 crash in 1996), and Superman & Lois. On the film side, he contributed to Wonder Woman, co-wrote Wonder Woman 1984, and worked on Aquaman and Shazam!. After stepping down from DC Entertainment, he founded Mad Ghost Productions to continue developing film and TV projects independently.

Most recently, Johns co-founded Ghost Machine in 2023 — an ambitious creator-owned publishing imprint distributed through Image Comics, alongside collaborators including Gary Frank, Ivan Reis, Jason Fabok, and Bryan Hitch. The imprint publishes his original titles Geiger, Redcoat, Rook: Exodus, and Hyde Street, with Redcoat already in development as a feature film through Atlas Entertainment as of late 2025.
